Regular Ramblings

Is there anywhere in Winnipeg where everyone knows your name? Look around you. Some of you, perched atop your bar stools, may think “everybody here knows my name” in which case, you’re a regular. If it’s not you, chances are you can pick out that one guy or girl who’s in the same spot day in and day out.

Why are we such creatures of habit? We all like having a familiar face smile and say “What’ll it be?”  even though they already know the answer to that question. We like being able to tell our stories and jokes, or talk about other people in our lives in a way that makes us feel a little bit more superior. Oh come on admit it...you know you do.

We, at Urban Diversion, have a special fondness for one rambling regular and we thought we’d share some of his finest moments with you. (Since you and he are so very much alike.)

Cliff Notes

Some insights from Clifford Clavin, the memorable mailman from Cheers.
(We did a bit of research, and most of what he says here is false.)

 They're on the Prowl

What do the Palomino, Courtney Cox, and the Assiniboine Park Zoo have in common? You guessed it: Cougars. The nickname “Cougar” -- or “Coug” [coo-gh] for short -- has been around for a long time, but we’re seeing a sudden resurgence in popularity these days.

The reality TV show The Cougar -- filmed a la The Bachelorette, but with an older woman seeking younger men -- premiered its first season in April.  True to TV trend patterns, the Cougar pack is growing with Courtney Cox playing the lead character in the new sitcom Cougar Town that launched last week.

So what’s the deal? Is the once derogatory name suddenly acceptable and maybe even cool?  We wondered where the nickname come from and if there is any real basis for comparison so we spoke with Dr. Robert Wrigley, Zoo Curator at the Assiniboine Park Zoo to find out a little bit about the wild cats and their typical mating habits.

With regards to their typical mating habits Wrigley says, “Cougars can be out hunting anytime of the day or night, but generally are most active at night...The cougar spends most of its life alone, coming together mainly during the mating season.”

The Social Phenomenon PDF Print E-mail

Socials…it’s a love hate relationship between the cheap and the cheaper. The people organizing the socials want money, and the people who go to them want to spend even less. It’s always the same hook and liner for them, “Come on, cheap drinks and TONS of prizes!! AND you get a free meal!” The “Free Meal” usually consisting of rye bread, cheap cold cuts, pickles, and little squares of cheese.

I, personally, despise socials. The long rectangular tables make it impossible to talk to anyone but whoever is beside or across from you, 90% of the time the music is terrible, and half the time they run out of beer so everyone is forced to slam back really cheap vodka or whiskey and get subsequently annihilated. The idea of a social is great, just like Communism (everyone is equal! Hooray!), but somehow the idea of it gets miscued along the way.

FALL FOR FASHION

If you find yourself low on cash then you’re in luck. Seem absurd? Well, it isn’t. You can have all the fall fashion trends at your fingertips and you only need to add a few key pieces to your wardrobe to make it happen. Don’t get us wrong, you should still be shopping your little heart out!  But with a few simple purchases, you’ll find you don’t need to break the budget to fit in this season. We scoured the web to see what’s hot and we’ve compiled a fashion cheat sheet for the upcoming season so you don’t get swept away with the leaves.

Why this season is affordable: First and foremost, we are seeing a lot of the same colours and inspirations from last fall.  Lots of solid classic colours, and yes, you can still wear high boots. In fact, if you want to be right in style, wear boots that come over your knees or even thigh-high. (Warning: if you’re rocking the thigh-highs, try to avoid going “Pretty Woman” with the patent leather.)
